Mica Retarders
Mica is transparent in the region of about 350
nm to 6 µm, but not free of absorption. For use in retardation plates
it is split into sheets so that the path difference is λ/2
or λ/4 for one individual wavelength (zero order).
The accuracy of the path difference is 1 to 5%. Mica retarders are zero
order.
The sheets are cemented between plane parallel
plates of crown glass BK 7; the deviation of the cemented unit is either
less than 5" or less than 5'. The flatness of the outer faces is λ/10.
Mica retarders are produced for wavelengths in the range from 400 nm to
about 2 µm.

The retardation plates can be mounted in cylindrical mounts engraved with the fast axis, the path difference and the respective wavelength (the clear diameters of the mounts are always 0.5 to 1 mm smaller than those of the plates):
- Holders up to 30 mm diameter → RGZ 0.30
- Holders up to 40 mm diameter → RGZ 0.40
- Multilayer antireflection coatings, minimal residual reflection < 0.2% per face → RGZ 1.02
